Play Responsibly

Where to get help

If gambling has stopped being fun or has become a problem, help is one call away. The South African Responsible Gambling Foundation runs a free, confidential helpline on 0800 006 008 that answers 24 hours a day in English, isiZulu and Afrikaans. The counsellors are trained to speak to the person affected as well as to family members. In an emergency involving self-harm, dial 112 from any mobile and ask for the Lifeline response.

Limits and tools

Every operator we recommend offers deposit limits, loss limits, session timers, cooling-off periods and permanent self-exclusion. These tools live in the account area under Responsible Play, Account Settings or Safer Gambling depending on the brand. Set them before you make the first deposit, not after a bad session. A deposit limit is harder to lift than it looks: most operators enforce a 72-hour wait and a two-step confirmation on any increase, which gives you time to reconsider.

Signs of problem

Chasing losses, playing with money set aside for bills, hiding play from family, lying about results, needing a bigger stake to feel the same thrill, borrowing to play — all are early signs. If more than one of these fits, pause now, lock the account for seven days using the cooling-off tool and call the helpline listed above. The seven-day lock is reversible but takes 24 hours to come off, which is often enough to break the cycle.

Helpline list

South African Responsible Gambling Foundation on 0800 006 008, 24 hours a day. Gamblers Anonymous SA runs weekly meetings in Johannesburg, Cape Town and Durban — the schedule is on their website and the first visit is free. Lifeline SA on 0861 322 322 for broader emotional support. Family members of a problem gambler can call the SARGF helpline too; the counsellors have a separate script for relatives and do not need the player's permission.
